Rich culture, vibrant cities and stunning beaches are what make Thailand the ultimate summer holiday destination. But if you just want to relax, go shopping and immerse yourself in nature without too much of the hustle and bustle of the big city, one of the best ways to experience Thailand is to island hop along the vast coastline.

Island hopping is an adventure for those who like a more dynamic getaway. There are hundreds of islands to explore, each one different from the last. Here are some of the most popular, must-see islands around Thailand that you can explore:

Phuket

You’ve heard of Phuket, Thailand’s largest and most famous island, with world renowned accommodation, incredible beaches and great dive sites among the surrounding islands. If you want to visit some of the outlying islands along the east and south-east, Phuket is a good starting point. There’s plenty to do, including sampling a sumptuous Thai meal at one of the many restaurants in the city or taking a leisurely stroll along the pristine white sand of Kata Beach. Cool off in the sea during the day and take advantage of the shopping alleys along the main street, which sell everything from jewellery to snorkelling gear. If you’re looking for an awesome dive site, the Similan Islands north of Phuket are rated among the Top 10 greatest diving spots.

Koh Samui (Gulf of Thailand)

A backpacker’s paradise, and ultimate Thailand holiday destination Koh Samui is a coastal gem with a great contrast of rolling hills, coconut plantations and lush grasslands. The crystal blue waters are breath-taking and the vibrant nightlife is great for the younger crowds. It’s a less-commercialised, more laidback location with accommodation options to suit all budgets. Some of the island activities are snorkelling, diving and kayaking on the many beaches located on the island. If you’re the exploring type, take a tour around the Butterfly Farm or watch the Snake Show. There are a number of ways to relax on this island – get a full-body Thai massage or learn more about traditional Thai cuisine by taking a cooking class.

Koh Pha Ngan

If you tend to get restless while on holiday, the island of Koh Pha Ngan ought to fix that. Perhaps most widely known for its full moon parties, cheap accommodation and amazing food – it also has plenty of tranquil beaches and ancient temples to explore. There are mountain treks and bicycle trails for more adventurous tourists as well as the picturesque Than Sadet Waterfall to admire.

Koh Hae (Coral Island)

A half hour boat ride from Phuket, this popular Thailand travel spot is perfect for a range of water activities such as water-skiing, sailing, para-sailing, scuba diving and snorkelling. Novice snorkelers and kids can venture into the clear shallow reefs. If you’re looking for a small pleasant beach away from the crowds, Banana Beach is the place to relax for a while. Hire a boat or take the jungle trail from Long Beach to get there.

Koh Tao (Turtle Island)

This is a smaller island with a more laidback lifestyle, a world away from the bustling city. Grab your snorkelling gear and head to the beach to explore the vast colourful underwater world, stay in a classic bungalow or the more modern and luxurious resorts if that’s more your style. This is the place for divers and paradise seekers.

Asia is a feast for the curious mind and wondering feet alike. A continent rich in culture, culinary delights and natural beauty, Asia is unlike anywhere else in the world. It’s immeasurable delights attract a staggering number of guests; some 308 million in 2016 alone.

Many people choose to adopt the rough and ready approach when travelling across Asia, favouring backpacking and hostels over a 5 star getaway. With the stimulating sights, sounds and tastes Asian affords its visitors however, also comes an unwanted detraction – biting insects.

Asia is one of the world’s hot spots when it comes to biting insects, with a mirage of nasties, from leeches to mosquitoes. Not only can these creepy crawlies pack a punch when it comes the the bite they inflict, but can also carry a variety of diseases, such as Malaria. Avoiding the bite is important to making the most of your Asian adventure.

By following our top tips, we’ll help you get the best from your trip:

1. Insect Repellent

One of the most obvious, but important allies you can take with you on your travels is a trusted repellent. Find a lightweight repellent that will be both effective and kind to the skin. Some chemical-based repellents can dry out the skin with repeated use, leading to skin irritation.

By finding a chemical-free, natural repellent you’ll help keen your skin in tip-top condition. We’ve come across some great options including the chemical free moisturisers and perfumes from Alfresco, that have the benefit of smelling great too!

Remember to re-apply several times during the day, especially so after showering or getting caught out in one of those Asian “showers!”

2. Clothing

Taking protective clothing with you will help ensure that you minimise the bare skin at risk of insect bites. At sunset and sunrise, be especially alert, and cover up as much of your body as possible.

Harem pants will help keep your legs cool, while ensuring your legs are covered. There are also a variety of clothing products available with insect-repellents already impregnated through the fabric, which are especially helpful in both covering bare skin, and deterring insects from landing.

3. Keeping Water Covered

Uncovered water attracts insects. If you are spending time outdoors, ensure than any water is covered. Mugs, bottles and buckets should all be emptied and turned upside down, when left for any period of time. If you really want to stay away from biting insects then ensure you don’t spend too much time directly on a the banks of a water source too.

4. Shower Regularly

The tropical climate means humidity is high across Asia, and even after a short walk, you may find yourself profusely sweating. Sweat can actually attract biting insects, and therefore keeping yourself clean is imperative. Shower regularly, and apply generous amounts of anti-perspirant.

5. Feet Protection

One area of the body that is often neglected when it comes to insect protection are the feet. It can be oh-so tempting to grab a pair of snazzy flip flops and live in them for the duration of your trip. Ensure that at night and when sleeping, you cover your feet. Wearing socks will help minimise the skin on show. Also be religious in applying insect repellent to your feet

6. Anti-Insect Nets

When spending time in a particularly prone area, nets are a fabulous way for keeping biting insects at bay. If you are camping, ensure you sleep within a net that covers your full bed. Face-sized nets that attach to hats are also a great way of keeping pests at bay when you are in particularly mosquito prone areas such as forests.

7. Repellent Candles

Bug-busting candles are a fabulous addition to your kit. Most of these candles contain Citronella, a naturally derived product from Lemongrass, which contains insect-repelling qualities. Keep a candle lit on the balcony of your hotel room, or outside your tent at night, to both provide a lovely light source, but to also ensure that insects are kept away.

Travelling across Asia finds itself onto many a good bucket list. From gap-year adventures, to a place to blow those retirement savings, it has something to offer all ages. Ensure you make the most of your time by keeping yourself safe from biting insects.

Planning a vacation in Sri Lanka? Set aside a day or two at the historic town of Sigiriya. Located in the midst of the Cultural Triangle, the town and its surrounds are full of heritage sites for you to discover.

1. Visit the Fortress in the Sky

Traverse the timeworn remnants of an ancient citadel at Lion Rock in Sigiriya.

Also known as the Fortress in the Sky, it was constructed about 1,500 years ago by King Kashyapa. Having usurped the throne from his father, the king feared retribution from his half-brother and rightful heir to the throne. As a result, he commissioned the construction of this fortified rock citadel in order to better defend himself from attack.

Climb up the many sheer steps set by the rock-side and make your way to the top of Lion Rock. Once there, you can enjoy a sweeping vista of the town. On the way up, stop to observe the intricately painted ancient frescoes on the walls. While their true identity of these women remains a topic for debate, many believe that they were royal concubines of King Kashyapa.

The entrance fee is about USD 30, and the attraction is open between 07:00 am and 06:00 pm. If you want to beat the tropical heat, the best time to make the climb is early in the morning.

2. Drop by the Sigiriya Museum

Just outside the ruins of the citadel, a 15-minute walk from Lion Rock, you will stumble upon the Sigiriya Museum. If you want an overview of the history of the kingdom, this museum is worth a quick visit.

There is a small entrance fee of USD 5. However, if you have already paid for entry to the fortress, the fee is waived. Opening times are from 08:30 am to 5:30 pm.

3. Explore the Ancient Caves

Visit the 2,000-year-old Golden Temple in Dambulla.

It is the town’s main attraction and is also known as the Dambulla Cave Temple. The temple’s many rooms are set inside a series of natural caverns.

This makes for a unique experience indeed. To add to the enchanting atmosphere, the views from the caves are wonderfully scenic. Even those who’ve experienced their fair share of Buddhist temples are likely to be enthralled by a visit here.

Entrance to this attraction will cost you a little over USD 10.

4. Enjoy the Views from Up High

Do you enjoy hiking?

If the answer is yes, make sure to include a climb of Pidurangala Rock in your Sigiriya itinerary. The views from the top are amazing and include a breath-taking sight of Lion Rock.

5. In Search of Elephants

Interested in witnessing Sri Lanka’s celebrated elephant gatherings?

Head to Kaudulla National Park, which is located about an hour’s drive from Sigiriya. Along with Minneriya National Park, it is one of the two destinations on the island where you can observe this phenomenon.

To enter the park, you will need to pay a fee of USD 15.

6. Explore the Ruins of Polonnaruwa

Located about 1 hour and 15 minutes away from Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa was once a medieval capital on the island.

The historic city has been declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is home to some interesting ruins. Among these are remnants of a royal palace complex.

You can explore the ruins on foot or by bicycle. If you like the idea of the latter option, make sure to rent out a bicycle at the entrance to the ruins. They will cost you a few hundred rupees for the day.

Be prepared to fork out USD 25 as an entrance fee.

7. The Magnificent Elephant Gathering

Enjoy a wildlife safari at Minneriya National Park. Perhaps Sri Lanka’s most well-known national park with regards to spotting elephants, it is famous for hosting elephant gatherings.

Every year, during the months of July and November, elephants flock to the park’s reservoir in search of water. Sri Lankan elephants have followed this tradition during the country’s dry season for centuries.

Same as Kaudulla National Park, the entrance fee is USD 15.

8. Ancient Marvels of Anuradhapura

Situated about 1.5 hours away from Sigiriya by car, is the ancient city of Anuradhapura.

This historic town served as an ancient capital for many centuries. In fact, it has been recognised as one of the longest continuously inhabited cities on the planet.

It’s also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is home to fascinating ruins. One of which, is the remnants of twin bathing pools, known as Kuttam Pokuna in the local language. These pools are renowned for their advanced use of ancient hydraulic engineering techniques.

Are you a culture and history buff? If so, make Sigiriya your base while exploring the Cultural Triangle. The town is one of the country’s most iconic tourist spots. As a result, there is a range of luxury and budget hotels in Sigiriya. You certainly won’t lack for choice in terms of accommodation, no matter your tastes and budget requirements. Furthermore, attractions in Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Dambulla are an hour and a half’s drive away, or less. This makes day excursions quite easy to arrange.
