The Setting and Coastal Views

The biggest surprise at Grandma Homemade Thai Food comes when you step onto the dining decks. After the simple, almost residential arrival, the restaurant opens onto a peaceful hillside surrounded by tropical vegetation, with wide views across Phuket’s west coast.

There are several covered, open-sided deck areas, allowing you to enjoy the scenery while remaining shaded from the tropical sun. Looking south, the view stretches across the coastline towards Le Méridien and Karon Noi Beach, with the Karon headland and Ko Pu visible farther in the distance. From the other side of the property, there are glimpses back towards Patong through the surrounding hills and vegetation.

What stood out during our visit wasn’t simply the view, but how quiet the setting felt. We arrived at around 3pm during the low season and found a calm, unhurried atmosphere that felt remarkably removed from central Patong, despite being only a relatively short distance away.

If possible, choose a table on one of the outer deck areas. Sitting among the greenery with a cold drink and the coastline stretching out below is a large part of what makes a visit to Grandma memorable.

What We Ate at Grandma Homemade Thai Food

We kept our order fairly simple during this visit, choosing chicken pad kra pao, a Phuket-style green chicken curry, along with an iced cocoa and iced green tea. Our total bill for two was approximately ฿395, making it a satisfying and affordable late lunch considering the setting.

The food felt consistent with the restaurant itself: uncomplicated, freshly prepared Thai cooking rather than elaborate presentation. Our dishes didn’t arrive instantly, but we weren’t waiting particularly long either. It had the feel of food being cooked to order rather than something prepared in advance and served as quickly as possible.

Our order represents only a small part of the menu, so we wouldn’t judge the restaurant’s entire food offering from a single meal. Other visitors frequently mention dishes including Pad Thai, pad kra pao, Panang curry, mango sticky rice, Thai milk tea and noodle dishes, while reasonable pricing is another recurring theme in reviews.

For us, the appeal wasn’t one standout dish in isolation. It was being able to enjoy straightforward Thai food at a reasonable price while sitting on a quiet hillside deck overlooking the coast.

The Family Atmosphere and Grandma’s Cats

The name Grandma Homemade feels particularly appropriate once you spend some time here. The owners were genuinely warm and welcoming during our visit, and combined with the home-like setting, the experience felt much more personal than eating in a conventional restaurant.

They are also clearly cat lovers. The family told us they currently care for around ten cats, including cats from the surrounding area that have found their way here after being left without homes. Their affection for them has even become part of the restaurant’s identity, with cats incorporated into the Grandma logo.

One 13-year-old cat has the freedom to wander around the property and may come to investigate visitors, while the other cats are kept together in a well-maintained protective enclosure. They appeared comfortable and well cared for, and the enclosure has been incorporated neatly into the property rather than feeling like an afterthought.

Grandma isn’t a cat café, and the cats aren’t presented as an attraction. They’re simply part of the family and another small detail that contributes to the unusually homely character of the place. Other visitors have also commented on the warm, family-like atmosphere and the cats cared for at the property.

For us, this combination of welcoming owners, cats, simple surroundings and the peaceful hillside setting is what makes the restaurant feel much more like visiting someone’s home for a meal than simply choosing another place to eat around Patong.

Combine Grandma with a Visit to Freedom Beach

Grandma Homemade Thai Food is particularly well placed to combine with a visit to nearby Freedom Beach. Rather than making the journey into the hills solely for the restaurant, the two experiences can work naturally together as part of a morning or half-day exploring this quieter side of Patong.

Our preference would be to visit Freedom Beach early in the morning, before the heat builds and the beach becomes busier. After spending a few hours by the water, make your way back up the hill and stop at Grandma for a late breakfast or lunch, or simply settle onto the deck with a cold drink and enjoy the view.

The uphill journey from the beach means Grandma arrives at a particularly welcome point in the day. Once you reach the restaurant, you can cool down in the shade, take your time over some food and look back across the coastline you have just been exploring.

Even if you aren’t hungry enough for a full meal, we think the setting makes Grandma worthwhile as a place to stop for a drink and relax before continuing back towards Patong.

Its elevated location is responsible for much of the restaurant’s tranquillity and impressive coastal outlook, but it also means getting there requires a little more effort than visiting restaurants in central Patong.

The final approach climbs through the hillside and includes sections of unsealed, uneven road. We found it quite bumpy in places, so if you’re travelling by scooter, take your time and ride according to the conditions rather than rushing the final section. The road shouldn’t necessarily put you off visiting, but it is something worth knowing before you set out.

If you’re arriving by car or scooter, there is plenty of free parking in the open area immediately in front of the restaurant. Visitors relying on taxis or ride-hailing services should also keep the hillside location in mind, particularly when arranging their return journey. Other visitors have occasionally reported difficulty arranging pickups from the area.

Once you arrive, the restaurant itself is informal and easygoing. The dining decks are covered but open-sided, and we found the toilets clean and well maintained during our visit. Cash is the preferred payment method, although Thai QR payment was also available when we visited.

The slightly adventurous journey up ultimately feels appropriate for Grandma. You leave behind the busy streets around Patong, climb into increasingly green surroundings and arrive somewhere that feels unexpectedly peaceful — with the coastal view waiting for you on the other side.

There are plenty of places around Patong serving Thai food, and there are certainly restaurants that are easier to reach. What makes Grandma different is the complete experience: the slightly adventurous journey into the hills, the home-like arrival, genuinely welcoming owners, freshly prepared Thai food and the unexpected tranquillity and coastal views once you settle onto the deck.

Our meal was simple and reasonably priced, but we left remembering the setting and hospitality just as much as the food. Sitting among tropical vegetation overlooking Phuket’s west coast feels remarkably removed from the crowds of central Patong.

We’d particularly recommend Grandma as part of a morning at Freedom Beach, followed by lunch or a cold drink on the deck. Just take it easy on the uneven road on the way up and bring cash if possible.
