So, how much does a holiday in Phuket cost? For two adults spending seven nights on the island, around ฿40,000 plus flights can provide a genuinely good holiday, including comfortable accommodation, restaurant meals, a Phi Phi Islands trip, Phuket sightseeing, Thai massages, nightlife and plenty of beach time.

Move into four-star accommodation and the same type of holiday can cost around ฿44,000–67,000, while choosing a beachfront resort can push the total beyond ฿100,000 in high season.

The biggest difference is not necessarily how much of Phuket you experience. Accommodation choice and the time of year can have a much greater effect on the final cost than saving a few hundred baht on meals, transport or activities.

To make those figures useful, we have costed a realistic seven-night holiday for two adults based in Karon rather than relying on a generic daily spending allowance. It includes six full days with a mixture of beaches and relaxation, sightseeing and Thai culture, Old Phuket Town, Phi Phi, massages and a proper night out in Patong.

We have included the detailed itinerary and costs further down the guide so you can see exactly what the estimates cover. You can also use it as a template for calculating your own Phuket holiday — change the hotel, remove activities you do not want, add experiences that matter to you and adjust the food or nightlife spending to suit the way you travel.

The result is not the cheapest possible week in Phuket and it is not a luxury travel budget. It is a practical estimate of what a good first holiday in Phuket can realistically cost — and where your choices make the biggest difference.

The important point is that the experiences do not need to disappear as the budget falls. Our good-value couple still visits Phi Phi, explores Phuket and Old Town, has Thai massages, eats out throughout the week and enjoys a night in Patong.

For most travellers, accommodation choice and season will have a much greater effect on the final Phuket holiday cost than saving a few hundred baht on meals or activities.

What Our Phuket Holiday Budget Includes

For this comparison, we have based our costs on two adults sharing a room for seven nights in Karon, giving them an arrival day, six full days in Phuket and a departure day.

The itinerary is designed around what we consider a realistic first holiday in Phuket rather than the cheapest possible week on the island. It combines beach and pool time with some of the experiences many first-time visitors will reasonably want to include.

Our budget allows for:

• airport transfers to and from Karon
• seven nights of accommodation
• breakfasts where they are not included with the hotel
• normal lunches and dinners throughout the stay
• moderate spending on drinks
• a shared Phuket sightseeing and cultural tour
• additional time exploring and dining in Old Phuket Town
• a full-day Phi Phi Islands excursion
• Thai massages
• beach loungers and normal beach spending
• a night in Patong with dinner, drinks and dancing
• local transport required by the itinerary
• a traditional longtail boat experience where weather and sea conditions permit

We have not automatically selected the cheapest version of each experience. A reputable shared island tour, for example, makes more sense for this holiday than choosing an operator solely because it advertises the lowest price.

The same principle applies to accommodation. In our good-value model at Allstar Guesthouse, we use a Deluxe Double with Balcony rather than the cheaper Standard Double. Saving money should not require turning a seven-night tropical holiday into an exercise in choosing the lowest available price.

International or domestic flights to Phuket are not included because their cost depends heavily on where you are travelling from. We have also excluded travel insurance, shopping, souvenirs and other highly personal expenditure.

Most importantly, the three accommodation levels do not represent three completely different travellers. They are essentially the same couple taking the same Phuket holiday and choosing to spend different amounts on where they stay. This allows us to see how accommodation and season affect the total cost without making the lower-cost holiday less of a holiday.

The Seven-Night Phuket Holiday We Are Costing

A seven-night stay normally gives you six full days in Phuket between arriving and departing. We have not tried to fill every one of those days with organised activities. Phuket is a tropical holiday destination, so beach time, slower mornings and afternoons by the pool are part of the holiday rather than empty spaces that need filling.

At the same time, a first visit spent almost entirely around the hotel would not provide a particularly useful basis for estimating what many travellers actually spend. Our itinerary therefore combines time in Karon with an island excursion, Phuket sightseeing, Thai culture, Old Phuket Town and a night out in Patong.

Arrival Day — Arrive and Settle Into Karon

After arriving at Phuket International Airport, our couple takes a single airport transfer to their hotel in Karon. We have allowed around ฿1,000 for the vehicle, rather than pricing the transfer separately for each passenger.

There is deliberately no sightseeing planned for arrival day. Flight times vary, delays happen and travelling can be tiring. After checking in, there is enough time to unpack and explore Karon on foot, walk towards the beach and get a first feel for the area.

For dinner, we have allowed for a normal Thai restaurant rather than choosing either the cheapest local meal available or somewhere particularly expensive. Several shared dishes, rice and drinks for two come to around ฿900 in our model.

We have also allowed approximately ฿250 for another drink each while wandering around Karon after dinner before returning to the hotel.

Estimated arrival-day spending for two: about ฿2,150, excluding accommodation.

This is already an example of why a flat daily Phuket budget can be misleading. Arrival day costs relatively little beyond the airport transfer and evening meal, while later days containing organised excursions will naturally cost considerably more.

Day 1 — Karon Beach and Relaxation

The first full day stays close to Karon. After travelling the previous day, there is little reason to start the holiday with an early pickup or a long journey across Phuket.

Breakfast is the first cost that can vary according to accommodation. Where breakfast is included in the hotel rate, there is nothing additional to add. Where it is not, we have allowed around ฿500 for breakfast and drinks for two at a café or restaurant in Karon.

The morning is spent at Karon Beach, swimming, walking the sand and settling into the slower pace of the holiday. We have allowed around ฿200 for two beach loungers and a small amount for cold drinks rather than attaching a large spending allowance to what is essentially a free experience.

Lunch is casual and close to the beach, with approximately ฿600 for two providing enough for a normal Thai meal and drinks without deliberately searching for the cheapest food available.

The afternoon can be divided between the beach and hotel pool before heading out for one of the experiences that remains remarkably affordable in Thailand: a massage. We have budgeted ฿400 per person for a one-hour massage, or ฿800 for the couple.

Dinner is another relaxed meal in Karon. Around ฿900 for two allows for several Thai dishes, rice and drinks, followed by approximately ฿250 if they stop for another drink while walking around afterwards.

There is nothing particularly ambitious about the first day, and that is intentional. Beach time is not something that needs to be squeezed between Phuket attractions. For many visitors, being able to swim, relax, eat well and slow down is a substantial part of why they chose a tropical holiday in the first place.

Day 2 — Phuket Sightseeing, Thai Culture and Old Phuket Town

Day 2 provides the first broader look at Phuket. Rather than hiring a private driver, our budget uses a shared half-day Phuket sightseeing tour with hotel pickup, allowing the couple to visit several of the island’s principal sights without paying separately for transport between each stop.

After breakfast, the tour collects them from Karon and typically combines viewpoints with cultural stops such as Wat Chalong before reaching Phuket Old Town. We have allowed around ฿2,400 for two adults for this part of the day.

Many sightseeing tours return guests to their hotels after four or five hours. Instead, our couple remains in Old Phuket Town once the useful organised part of the day is complete. This gives them considerably more time to explore the historic streets independently rather than treating Old Town as a brief photo stop.

Lunch costs approximately ฿600 for two, followed by an afternoon walking around the Sino-Portuguese streets, exploring Thalang Road and the surrounding lanes and stopping somewhere for coffee, cake or cold drinks. We have allowed around ฿400 for the afternoon stop, but no separate sightseeing charge simply for walking around Old Town.

Dinner is also taken in Old Town rather than returning immediately to Karon. Around ฿1,000 for two allows for a good Thai meal and drinks before taking one shared taxi or ride-hailing car back to Karon, for which we have allowed approximately ฿500.

Using a shared tour is not the only way to organise this day. Travellers who want to choose every stop, spend longer at particular viewpoints or change the itinerary as they go may prefer to hire a private driver. It costs more, but the additional flexibility can be worthwhile. Our shared-tour model simply represents a practical way for first-time visitors to see several parts of Phuket while keeping the overall holiday cost sensible.

Staying in Old Town for the afternoon and evening also makes this a substantially fuller experience than the standard half-day tour. By the time the couple returns to Karon, they have spent most of the day seeing another side of Phuket rather than simply moving between their hotel and the beach.

Day 3 — A Full-Day Phi Phi Islands Trip

Day 3 is the biggest organised excursion of the week. For many first-time visitors, seeing some of the islands and limestone scenery beyond Phuket is an important part of the holiday, so we have included a full-day Phi Phi Islands trip rather than removing it from the lower-cost model.

The day starts early, with breakfast before the tour pickup. Where breakfast is not included with the hotel, we continue to allow around ฿500 for two, although in practice an early departure may mean arranging a breakfast box or having something simple before leaving.

We have budgeted ฿5,000 for two adults for a reputable shared speedboat excursion rather than selecting the cheapest advertised Phi Phi tour we could find. Our allowance includes hotel pickup and return, boat transport, the principal island stops, national-park fees, snorkelling equipment, lunch and the basic drinks or refreshments normally provided during the trip.

Because those inclusions cover most of the day, there is little reason to add separate allowances for taxis, lunch or entrance fees.

After returning to Karon in the late afternoon, the itinerary becomes deliberately uncomplicated. A full day travelling by speedboat, swimming and exploring the islands is enough activity for one day. After showering and relaxing at the hotel, we have allowed around ฿900 for an easy dinner for two in Karon.

It is possible to find cheaper Phi Phi tours, just as it is possible to spend considerably more on premium small-group trips or private boats. Our figure sits between those extremes because the purpose of this budget is not to find the lowest advertised price. We want the lower-cost holiday to retain the experiences that make a first visit to Phuket worthwhile.

The precise Phi Phi itinerary can also vary with weather, sea conditions and seasonal conservation closures. Travellers should check the stops included when booking rather than choosing a tour solely on the headline price.

Day 4 — An Easy Day in Karon and a Night Out in Patong

After the early start and full day at Phi Phi, Day 4 begins slowly. There is no organised morning activity: breakfast is followed by time at Karon Beach or around the hotel pool, with approximately ฿600 for a casual lunch for two.

The quieter daytime also makes sense because the main activity comes later. In the late afternoon, the couple takes one shared taxi or ride-hailing car from Karon to Patong, for which we have allowed around ฿300.

Arriving before dark provides time to walk along the beachfront and see central Patong before heading for dinner. We have budgeted approximately ฿1,000 for dinner for two, including drinks.

After dinner, the evening moves towards Bangla Road. Rather than treating Patong nightlife as either a free walk along the street or an unlimited spending category, our budget assumes the couple actually has a night out. That might include an open-front bar or live music, followed by somewhere to dance later in the evening.

We have allowed around ฿1,450 for eight additional drinks between two people over the course of the night. The precise amount could obviously move considerably in either direction depending on whether they prefer local beer, cocktails, clubs or a much quieter evening.

At the end of the night, one shared late-night vehicle takes them back to Karon, with approximately ฿350 allowed for the return journey.

Nightlife is one of the easiest parts of a Phuket holiday budget to change. Someone having two beers and returning to Karon early will spend considerably less, while cocktails, premium clubs, beach clubs or a much bigger night can quickly push the cost higher.

Our calculation sits deliberately between those extremes. Patong is included because many first-time visitors to Phuket will reasonably want to experience its nightlife, and the budget allows them to actually enjoy an evening there rather than simply walk along Bangla Road and call it an activity.

The following morning is intentionally kept free of early pickups. A Phuket itinerary works rather better when a night of drinks and dancing is not followed by a 7 am transfer to a speedboat.

Day 5 — Slow Morning and a Traditional Longtail Boat

After the previous night in Patong, Day 5 has no early start. Breakfast can be taken late, followed by a quiet morning around Karon Beach or the hotel pool before a casual lunch, for which we have allowed around ฿600 for two.

In suitable conditions, the afternoon adds a very different boating experience from the previous Phi Phi excursion: hiring a traditional Thai longtail boat from the Karon area.

Rather than another full-day organised tour, the idea is simply to spend a few hours on the water, see part of Phuket’s coastline from the sea and stop for some additional swimming or beach time. We have allowed approximately ฿2,500 for the boat for two people.

The important distinction is that this is a price for the boat, not ฿2,500 per passenger. For a couple travelling together, private local transport and boat costs do not always double simply because there are two travellers.

Longtail boats from Phuket’s west coast are also dependent on sea and weather conditions. During the southwest monsoon, there will be days when taking a small boat from Karon is inappropriate or operators are not running. In that situation, we would treat the afternoon as flexible rather than suggesting travellers should take a boat simply because it appears on an itinerary.

The same approximate spending could be redirected towards another activity, another beach or simply retained. In favourable conditions, however, a longtail trip adds something distinctly Thai to the holiday without requiring another early start or full-day excursion.

After returning to Karon, we have included a second massage during the holiday. At approximately ฿400 per person, two one-hour massages add ฿800.

The evening remains relaxed, with around ฿900 for dinner and drinks for two before returning to the hotel.

By this stage, the couple has already experienced Phuket sightseeing, Old Phuket Town, Phi Phi and Patong. Day 5 therefore adds another recognisably Thai experience while still leaving much of the day for the beach, pool and a slower pace after the previous evening.

Day 6 — A Final Tropical Day in Karon

The final full day has no organised itinerary. After five days combining beaches, sightseeing, islands, Thai culture and nightlife, there is little benefit in squeezing another major excursion into the holiday simply because there is still space on the calendar.

After breakfast, the morning is spent at Karon Beach or around the hotel pool. We have allowed around ฿200 for two beach loungers and approximately **฿150 for cold drinks or coconuts during the morning.

Lunch is another casual meal in Karon, with approximately ฿600 for two, before leaving the afternoon free.

That could mean another swim, returning to the hotel pool, walking around Karon, stopping at a café or simply doing very little. We have allowed around ฿300 for coffee or drinks, but we have not added an arbitrary activity allowance simply to increase the day’s spending.

Travellers who still have something they particularly want to do can use this afternoon for it. Others may find that after several active days, having nowhere they need to be is precisely what they want from the final afternoon of a tropical holiday.

For the last evening, we have increased the restaurant allowance. Approximately ฿1,500 for two provides enough for a better final dinner — perhaps seafood and several Thai dishes with drinks — without moving into fine dining. We have also allowed around **฿250 for one final drink each afterwards.

Estimated Day 6 spending for two: about ฿3,000 with hotel breakfast included, or ฿3,500 when breakfast is purchased separately.

A free afternoon should not be mistaken for an incomplete itinerary. By this stage, the couple has experienced several different sides of Phuket while still having enough time to enjoy the reason many people choose the island in the first place: warm weather, beaches, swimming and the freedom to slow down.

The aim is to return home having enjoyed Phuket, not feeling as though every available attraction had to be completed before departure.

Departure Day — Karon to Phuket Airport

Departure day is kept simple because how much usable time remains depends entirely on the flight schedule.

Where breakfast is included with the hotel and the departure time allows, there is no additional breakfast cost. Where it is not included, we have allowed approximately ฿500 for breakfast for two before checking out.

The couple then takes one transfer from Karon to Phuket International Airport. We have allowed around ฿1,000 for the vehicle, rather than treating this as a per-person expense.

We have not added lunch, airport shopping or other spending after leaving Karon. A couple departing at 10 am will have a very different final day from someone catching an evening flight, so adding those costs would create precision that the model cannot realistically support.

What Does the Holiday Cost Before Accommodation?

Adding the arrival day, six full days and departure together gives us an underlying Phuket holiday cost of approximately ฿28,000–฿32,000 for two people before accommodation.

The difference primarily reflects whether breakfast is already included in the hotel rate rather than a change in what the couple does during the holiday.

That amount covers considerably more than meals and everyday spending. Our couple has travelled between Phuket Airport and Karon, eaten out throughout the week, spent time on the beach, had two massages each, taken a Phuket sightseeing tour, explored and eaten dinner in Old Phuket Town, spent a full day visiting the Phi Phi Islands, experienced a night out in Patong and allowed for a traditional longtail boat experience when conditions are suitable.

They have also had substantial time at Karon Beach and around their hotel pool without needing to attach a paid activity to every morning or afternoon.

This is why we have built the budget around an itinerary rather than starting with a daily spending figure. Some days cost relatively little, while a day containing a major island excursion naturally costs considerably more. Averaging everything into a single daily allowance hides how a Phuket holiday is actually experienced.

More importantly, this underlying holiday remains essentially the same in each of our three cost models.

The good-value traveller does not lose Phi Phi, Thai culture, massages or the night in Patong. The resort traveller does not suddenly gain private boats, fine dining or expensive attractions.

What changes substantially is where they sleep.

And over seven nights in Phuket, that can make a much bigger difference to the final bill than many of the experiences themselves.

How Accommodation Changes the Cost of the Same Phuket Holiday

Once the itinerary is fixed, accommodation becomes the largest variable in our comparison.

For each model, we have chosen a Karon property that we would genuinely consider suitable for a seven-night holiday. We have not searched for the cheapest available room simply to lower the first figure, nor have we selected suites and unnecessary upgrades to inflate the upper one.

The three couples still take essentially the same holiday. What changes is how much of their budget they choose to put into the place where they stay.

Good Value — Allstar Guesthouse

For the good-value model, we have chosen Allstar Guesthouse in Karon.

Importantly, we have not used its cheapest Standard Double room. Our calculation uses a Deluxe Double with Balcony, which provides a more appealing base for a couple spending an entire week in Phuket while remaining inexpensive compared with a full resort.

Allstar publishes seasonal room rates, making the comparison particularly useful. The Deluxe Double with Balcony is approximately:

• Low season: ฿1,095 per night
• High season: ฿1,895 per night

Across seven nights, accommodation therefore costs approximately ฿7,665 in low season or ฿13,265 in high season for the same room.

Breakfast is not included in the room price used for this model, so we use the higher version of our underlying holiday spending estimate, which includes purchasing breakfast during the week.

That produces a total cost of approximately:

Low season: ฿39,500 for two

High season: ฿45,000 for two

International flights remain excluded.

This is perhaps the most important result in the comparison. A holiday costing around ฿40,000 for two in low season is not seven days of trying to spend as little as possible.

Our couple still takes the Phi Phi excursion, sees Wat Chalong and other Phuket sights, spends an afternoon and evening exploring Old Phuket Town, has two massages each, enjoys a night of dinner, drinks and dancing in Patong, eats in restaurants throughout the week and has an allowance for a local longtail boat experience.

The saving comes primarily from choosing straightforward, good-value accommodation rather than removing Phuket from the holiday.

It would certainly be possible to spend less. Allstar itself offers a cheaper Standard room, and further savings could be made by changing transport, food, drinks and activities.

But that would answer a different question.

Our good-value model is intended to show what a genuinely enjoyable first Phuket holiday can cost when you spend carefully without making the entire trip about spending as little as possible.

Comfortable — Karon Sea Sands Resort

For the comfortable model, we move to Karon Sea Sands Resort, using a Deluxe Room rather than upgrading to a pool-access room or higher category simply because the accommodation budget has increased.

This changes the accommodation experience more than it changes the holiday itself. The couple now has a four-star resort directly across from Karon Beach, with a larger resort pool and facilities around them, while remaining in a location where restaurants, shops and much of Karon can still be reached on foot.

Representative rates for the Deluxe Room during our research put seven nights at approximately:

• Low season: around ฿16,000
• High season: around ฿35,000

Hotel prices are dynamic, so these should be treated as representative seasonal costs rather than fixed rates that every traveller will find. The difference nevertheless demonstrates how strongly the timing of a Phuket holiday can affect accommodation prices.

Depending on the rate booked, breakfast may be included. Where it is, some of the everyday food spending in our itinerary is already absorbed into the accommodation price; where it is not, travellers should allow approximately the same breakfast spending used in our good-value model.

That puts the complete seven-night holiday for two at roughly:

Low season: around ฿44,000–48,000

High season: around ฿63,000–67,000

International flights remain excluded.

What is particularly useful about this comparison is what has not changed.

The couple still visits Phi Phi, takes the same Phuket sightseeing tour, explores Old Phuket Town, has massages, spends a night in Patong and enjoys the same mixture of beach time, restaurants and slower tropical-holiday days.

Paying more has primarily bought them a different place to stay: more resort facilities, a very convenient position beside Karon Beach and accommodation that forms a larger part of the holiday experience.

The low-season comparison is especially interesting. Moving from our good-value guesthouse model to a comfortable four-star resort does not necessarily transform a Phuket holiday into an expensive trip. When seasonal room rates are favourable, the additional cost can be relatively modest across the entire week.

In high season, however, the accommodation gap becomes much more significant — even though the experiences outside the hotel remain almost identical.

Resort — Le Méridien Phuket Beach Resort

For the highest accommodation level in our comparison, we have chosen Le Méridien Phuket Beach Resort at Karon Noi.

Even here, we have not selected a suite or premium room simply to create an expensive upper figure. The model uses a normal guest room with a balcony, allowing the additional spending to reflect the move into a full beachfront resort rather than unnecessary room upgrades.

Le Méridien also differs from our first two choices in an important way: the accommodation itself becomes a much larger part of the tropical holiday. Its position on Karon Noi Beach, extensive swimming pools and resort facilities mean that time spent around the hotel is part of what the couple is paying for rather than simply somewhere to sleep between days out.

Representative rates observed during our research put seven nights at approximately:

• Low season: around ฿44,000
• High season: around ฿108,500

These are indicative seasonal prices rather than fixed rates. Resort pricing is dynamic, and individual dates, booking conditions and promotions can move the actual cost considerably.

Breakfast is included in the rate used for our model, reducing some of the everyday spending already included in the good-value calculation.

Combining the accommodation with the same underlying Phuket itinerary produces an approximate total of:

Low season: around ฿72,000 for two

High season: around ฿137,000 for two

International flights remain excluded.

That high-season figure is dramatically higher than our good-value model, but the couple has not suddenly started taking private yachts, eating in fine-dining restaurants or booking private sightseeing tours.

They still take essentially the same Phi Phi excursion. They still explore Old Phuket Town. They still have massages, spend an evening in Patong and divide the rest of the week between sightseeing and tropical holiday time.

The major difference is where they are staying and the season in which they are paying for it.

There is also genuine value behind that difference. At Le Méridien, the resort and beachfront setting can become part of the holiday itself. Someone who particularly values resort facilities, a more self-contained environment and immediate beach access may reasonably decide that this is where they want to spend more of their Phuket budget.

It does not, however, mean that they experience more of Phuket than the couple staying at Allstar Guesthouse.

That distinction is central to our comparison: spending substantially more on accommodation can change the comfort, facilities and setting of a Phuket holiday without materially changing the experiences available once you leave the hotel.

We have also deliberately stopped our comparison at this level. Phuket offers considerably more expensive suites, villas, private pools, exclusive resorts, private boats and fine dining, but once those choices are introduced there is little useful upper limit to what a seven-night holiday can cost.

This guide is intended to compare realistic mainstream holiday choices rather than calculate how expensive Phuket can become.

These totals are for two adults sharing for seven nights and exclude flights to Phuket, travel insurance, shopping and highly personal discretionary spending. Hotel prices are dynamic, so the figures should be treated as realistic planning estimates rather than guaranteed package prices.

What makes the comparison useful is that we have not progressively added more experiences as the accommodation budget increases.

All three couples can take the same Phi Phi trip, see Phuket’s cultural sights, spend time in Old Phuket Town, have massages, enjoy Karon Beach, take a traditional longtail boat when conditions permit and have a proper night out in Patong.

At the lower end, approximately ฿40,000 for two plus flights can therefore provide a varied seven-night Phuket holiday in low season without stripping away the experiences many first-time visitors come to Phuket to enjoy.

Moving into comfortable four-star accommodation increases the total, but particularly in low season the difference can remain relatively modest compared with the improvement in hotel facilities and setting.

At resort level, accommodation becomes a much larger component of the holiday budget. This is particularly apparent in high season, when the same underlying Phuket itinerary can cost well over ฿100,000 for two simply because of the property and travel dates selected.

The figures also reveal something that conventional daily-budget estimates tend to obscure: a more expensive Phuket holiday does not automatically mean doing more, while a less expensive holiday does not necessarily mean doing less.

For many mainstream travellers, the biggest financial decision is not whether to skip a massage, order a cheaper lunch or remove an island trip. It is where to stay and when to travel.

How Much Difference Does the Season Make?

Season can make a substantial difference to the cost of a Phuket holiday, but the effect is not spread evenly across everything you spend money on.

A Thai meal does not suddenly cost twice as much because you visit in January rather than September. Massage prices, drinks, local transport and many organised activities may fluctuate or change over time, but they do not generally produce the dramatic seasonal difference seen in hotel rates.

Accommodation is where the timing of your holiday can have the greatest financial impact.

Allstar Guesthouse provides a particularly clear example because it publishes seasonal rates. The same Deluxe Double with Balcony used in our comparison is around ฿1,095 per night in low season and ฿1,895 in high season.

Nothing about the room has changed. Across seven nights, however, the accommodation bill increases from approximately ฿7,665 to ฿13,265.

The difference becomes considerably larger as accommodation standards increase. Our representative high-season prices for Karon Sea Sands Resort and Le Méridien Phuket Beach Resort are substantially above their low-season levels, with the effect particularly pronounced at resort level.

This means saving money by travelling in low season does not necessarily require changing what you do once you arrive. You may still be able to take the same island excursion, eat at the same restaurants, have the same massages and spend the same evening in Patong. Much of the saving can come simply from paying less for the room you return to each night.

There is, however, an important trade-off.

Phuket’s lower-priced months overlap substantially with the southwest monsoon period. Rainfall is higher, sea conditions can be rougher and some marine activities are more weather-dependent. The longtail boat experience included in our itinerary, for example, may not be appropriate from Karon Beach on a day when conditions are poor.

That does not mean a low-season Phuket holiday consists of continuous rain, nor does high season guarantee perfect weather. It does mean travellers should weigh lower accommodation prices against greater weather uncertainty, particularly if beaches and boat trips are central to their plans.

For travellers with flexible dates, the decision therefore involves more than simply finding the cheapest month. Paying somewhat more for accommodation may be worthwhile if more settled beach conditions matter greatly to you, while travellers comfortable with some weather flexibility can potentially save substantially without reducing the overall quality of their holiday.

Can You Have a Cheaper Phuket Holiday?

Yes. It is entirely possible for two people to spend less than our good-value estimate, particularly in low season.

Our approximately ฿39,500 figure is not intended to represent the minimum amount required for seven nights in Phuket. It represents the cost of taking the fairly comprehensive holiday we have described while making sensible, value-conscious choices.

Even within our accommodation selection, there is room to save. At Allstar Guesthouse, we deliberately priced a Deluxe Double with Balcony rather than the cheaper Standard Double. Choosing the Standard room would immediately reduce the accommodation bill without changing anything else in the itinerary.

Airport transport is another opportunity. Our model allows for a direct vehicle between Phuket International Airport and Karon in both directions. Travellers willing to use public transport can spend considerably less.

Food can also be reduced without eating poorly. Phuket has inexpensive Thai restaurants, local markets and street food, and someone who prefers simple local meals could comfortably spend less than our restaurant allowances.

Other savings are entirely optional. You could have one massage rather than two, drink less alcohol, skip the longtail boat, spend less during the Patong evening or choose a less expensive island excursion.

The important point is that we have not used all of those savings to construct our headline budget.

Doing so might produce a much lower number, but it would gradually turn the exercise into a guide to minimising expenditure rather than answering what a good first holiday in Phuket realistically costs.

There is also no requirement to make every saving available to you. You might choose inexpensive accommodation because you expect to spend very little time in the room, while keeping the Phi Phi excursion and spending freely on food. Another traveller may prefer a better hotel but drink very little and have no interest in nightlife.

A holiday budget works best when you save on the things that matter less to you rather than automatically choosing the cheapest version of everything.

Our good-value model therefore provides a useful starting point rather than a spending target: you can go lower, but you do not have to remove the experiences that matter to you simply because you want to keep the overall cost under control.

Where Is It Worth Spending More?

Spending more in Phuket can improve a holiday, but the benefit depends heavily on where the additional money goes. Paying twice as much for something does not necessarily make that part of the trip twice as enjoyable.

Accommodation

Accommodation is the most obvious place to spend more because the difference can be experienced every day.

A better pool, more attractive room, beachfront position or resort environment may be worthwhile if you expect to spend substantial time around the hotel. This is particularly relevant on a tropical holiday, where an afternoon beside the pool is part of the experience rather than simply time between activities.

On the other hand, travellers who expect to be out exploring for much of the day may find a well-located guesthouse provides everything they actually need.

The decision is less about star ratings than how important the hotel itself is to your holiday.

Island and Boat Trips

We would be cautious about choosing an island excursion purely because it has the lowest advertised price.

The quality of the operator, boat, group size, itinerary, safety standards and what is included can matter considerably on a full-day trip. National-park fees, hotel transfers and lunch should also be checked before comparing headline prices.

That does not mean you need a private boat. A good shared excursion can provide the experience most first-time visitors are looking for without the substantial cost of a private charter.

Sightseeing and Private Drivers

Our budget uses a shared Phuket sightseeing tour because it provides an efficient and relatively inexpensive introduction to several parts of the island.

A private driver becomes worth considering when flexibility matters more than the saving.

You can decide how long to spend at Wat Chalong, skip stops that do not interest you, spend more time in Old Phuket Town and change the day as you go. For two people, it will cost more than joining a shared tour, but the additional control may justify the difference.

Food

You do not need to spend heavily to eat well in Phuket.

Good Thai food is available across a wide range of prices, and moving into increasingly expensive restaurants does not automatically produce a proportionate improvement in the experience.

Rather than budgeting for expensive meals every night, we would put more money towards the occasional restaurant that genuinely appeals — perhaps seafood, a particularly attractive setting or a better final-night dinner — and eat normally for the rest of the week.

Transport

For a couple, paying for convenient transport can often be worthwhile because the fare is shared.

Saving a relatively small amount by making a journey substantially slower or more complicated may make sense for some travellers, but it is not automatically the best use of limited holiday time.

That does not mean taking a taxi everywhere. Staying somewhere walkable, as our first two Karon accommodation choices allow, can reduce transport spending without sacrificing convenience.

Nightlife and Drinks

There is no particularly useful upper budget for nightlife.

A few beers, live music and dancing can make for an inexpensive evening. Cocktails, beach clubs, premium venues and longer nights can increase the cost very quickly.

Our Patong allowance is therefore designed to provide a genuine night out rather than define what nightlife in Phuket should cost. Travellers who care little about nightlife can save here easily; those for whom it is an important part of the holiday should simply allow more.

The broader lesson is straightforward: spend more where it changes something you personally value.

A better hotel may be worth far more to one couple than upgrading an island tour. Another couple may happily stay somewhere simple and use the difference for activities, food or several additional days in Thailand.

The best Phuket budget is not necessarily the largest one. It is the one that puts the money into the parts of the holiday you will actually notice.

So, How Much Should You Budget for a Week in Phuket?

For two adults planning a good seven-night holiday in Phuket, around ฿40,000 plus flights is a realistic starting point in low season if you choose good-value accommodation.

That does not mean staying somewhere we would be reluctant to recommend, eating as cheaply as possible or spending the entire week on Karon Beach. Our model still includes a Phi Phi Islands trip, Phuket sightseeing, Thai culture and Old Phuket Town, massages, restaurant meals, a night out in Patong and plenty of tropical holiday time.

Moving into comfortable four-star accommodation takes the same holiday to approximately ฿44,000–48,000 in low season, while high-season hotel rates can push it towards ฿63,000–67,000.

Choose a full beachfront resort such as Le Méridien Phuket Beach Resort and accommodation becomes a much larger part of the equation. Our representative model reaches approximately ฿72,000 for two in low season and around ฿137,000 in high season, despite the underlying itinerary remaining broadly unchanged.

Those figures should not be treated as fixed package prices. Hotel rates change continuously, tour prices move and every couple will make slightly different choices once they arrive. They are better used as realistic planning ranges for understanding what different levels of Phuket holiday spending actually provide.

The comparison also suggests that travellers trying to reduce their Phuket budget should look carefully at accommodation and travel dates before removing experiences from their itinerary.

Saving ฿500 on a massage or choosing a cheaper dinner makes relatively little difference to the total cost of a seven-night holiday. Saving several thousand baht across seven nights of accommodation can make a much larger difference without changing what you see or do in Phuket at all.

Conversely, spending more on accommodation can be entirely worthwhile when the hotel itself is important to the holiday. A beachfront resort, better pool and more attractive surroundings have real value for travellers who intend to use them.

There is therefore no single correct Phuket holiday budget.

But for the type of first visit we have costed here, the broad answer is useful: approximately ฿40,000 can provide a genuinely good-value week for two before flights, around ฿45,000–67,000 moves into comfortable accommodation depending on season, while a beachfront resort can take the same holiday well beyond ฿100,000 during high season.

The biggest lesson from the comparison is also one of the simplest: spending less in Phuket does not necessarily mean experiencing less Phuket.
